Hello everyone!
The Summer 2015 Schedule for the Shenandoah Valley Chess Club has been expanded.  Please check the website and Meetup page for more information.
Thank you to our participants, parents, and chess players for joining us on Saturday, June 28th for the 2nd Annual Chess Tournament at HRL!  A dozen tournament players competed. Other families, spectators, and players enjoyed pick up games too.
Congratulations to Quad Winners, Luke Cortes and Garrett Sleeth, for taking top place in their divisions.  We would especially like to salute Mr. Cortes, a local high schooler, who has improved considerably since learning the game not long ago.
Thanks also to Tim Davis and Herb Myers for helping with setup for the event.
We had an excellent time, especially the kids who received chess goody backpacks to keep their minds occupied for the rest of the summer.
We resume regular Monday meetings at Handley Library on Monday, September 14th from 4:30 to 7:30PM.
 Our Summer Schedule is growing.
On Saturday, July 11th and 25th at the Bowman Library in Stephens City, Virginia, join us for "The Chess Champs" program from 10AM to 12:30PM.
This is our first Stephens City event, courtesy of the Bowman Library, and a great step forward in our goal of introducing the game of Chess to all of the brightest minds in the Shenandaoh Valley region.
We will have designated instructional periods for beginner and intermediate/advanced players in addition to open play for everyone.
Chess Champs will be ongoing on select Saturdays throughout the summer.  If your child is participating in the HRL Summer Reading Program, they could earn points and rewards for participation.
For more information, feel free to contact myself or Donna Hughes at Bowman Library, phone number: (540) 869-9000.
Saturday Chess & Coffee hour is back! Special thanks to our local neighborhood shop, Steamies Cafe,
Join us for casual games in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere on Saturday, July 18th from 11:30am to 2:00PM.
Many have asked for Saturday Chess and we are finally making it happen again.  Thanks for your patience!
Expect more Saturday coffee dates at Steamie's for the remainder of 2015.
Bring your boards and be ready for a great time!
Chess Training Resources & Learning Opportunities
From time to time, we like to present training resources and learning opportunities to aid everyone in their exploration of the game.  There are many options available online, however we have found these following websites to be tried and true:
For Kids 12 and undercheck out,  the #1 Kids Chess Website,
ChessKid offers "a kid-friendly, easy to follow and comprehensive program that ANY parent teacher or coach can use to take their own chess-kid(s) all the way from total beginner to scholastic chess player."
The Shenandoah Valley Chess Club is partnered with Chesskid and has training opportunities available within the site to enhance the learning experience.  Feel free to explore with your child.  If you need help navigating the site, let us know.  We plan to jump further into this format in Fall 2015.
For players with basic knowledge of middlegame and endgame, we recommend two great sites:
Chess Tactics Server
 Chess Tempo
These FREE sites will provide many hours of solid study.
If you are a regular player on, consider joining TeamUSA Southeast and Team Virginia.  We play year-round online tournaments against teams around the country and around the world.  I am an admin for TeamUSA Southeast and we are always happy to accept local players.
If you are USCF-registered player who is looking for a challenge but has difficulty traveling for regular tournaments, consider playing with the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF) at  Tournaments play year-round for a small fee.  It is a challenge worth checking out.
Lastly, if you would like to meet with a local coach, there are a few long time Chess instructors in the area who might be available for one-on-one coaching.
The moral of the story?  There are many options available to fit your level of interest.
Take time to explore, and if you have questions, please let us know.
There has never been a better time in history to learn and enjoy the game.
Next event -- Saturday, July 11th at Bowman Library, Stephens City
10 AM to 12:30 PM
Bring your chessboards and equipment, or just yourself and a friend.  All ages and skill levels are welcome.
These events are FREE and Open to All who want to learn and play.
Thank you for your continued support and participation with the Shenandoah Valley Chess Club.
See you again soon!
