Location: Holiday Inn Winchester SE - Historic Gateway, 333 Front Royal Pike, Winchester, VA 22602 

Sections: This tournament is organized into two Sections:  Open and U1300.  All games are rated.  US Chess Federation Membership is required and available for purchase on-site.  Experienced Scholastic Players may find a greater challenge in the Open Section.  

Prizes: Open Section - 1st $100, 2nd $50, 3rd Prize

               Novice Section - 1st, 2nd, 3rd Trophy, Youth Medals

General Information: The Scholastic tournament is sponsored by Bowman Library.  Chess sets, boards, and scoresheets are provided.  Chess coaches will be onsite to guide first timers through tournament process and provide analysis in-between rounds.

This USCF rated tournament features multiple sections to accommodate a wide range of players and skill levels.  Prizes and food will be provided.  Sponsorships available.

SVCC - Seeing Multiple Moves Ahead 

Fall 2018 is a big deal!  In addition to many advances for chess in America and worldwide, the Shenandoah Valley Chess Club celebrate 5 years as a chess community!  

We will hold our 5-year celebration at Handley Library on Wednesday, September 5th, 4:30 to 7:30 pm.

We are also happy to announce that in Year 5, we are ready to pursue 501(C)3 tax-exempt status.

The organization and coordination to reach this point is a community achievement.  Your advice, guidance, patience, and support - from the very start - is the bedrock of our success.

We again thank you parents and players who continually donated time, ideas, and expertise to the Shenandoah Valley Chess program!


Regular Chess Meetings for Fall 2018

The Stephens City Chess Club meets every Saturday at Bowman Library, 10 am.

The Shenandoah Valley Chess Club returns to Handley Library with an Open House Kickoff, Wednesday, August 22 at 6:00 pm.  

ChessKid Scholastic Program and regular Wednesday meetings resume at Handley Library, August 29, 4:30 - 7:30 pm.

We are delighted to announce the 1st Apple Blossom Blitz Chess Tournament will be held at Godfrey Home during the 2018 Bloomin' Wine Festival in Old Town Winchester.

The event is sponsored by Incredible Flying Objects and kindly supported by The Godfrey Home and Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival.

We will pair opponents according to their appropriate skill levels so everyone has fun. Win, lose, or draw - everyone plays multiple games!

Spectators, beginner lessons, and casual games are FREE.

Outdoor tables and giant chess set will be setup on the walking mall.

Plenty of chess fun for tournament participants, kids, and anyone who wants to play.

We are excited to announce that chess will be in full effect at the 2018 Newtown Heritage Festival in Stephens City, Saturday May 26. 

We are planning a chess competition, outdoor games, and special prizes sponsored by the Newtown Heritage Festival team and Shenandoah Valley Chess Club! 

Site and tournament details will be announced in early May.

This will be an awesome day of family fun, celebrating the unique history of Stephens City and the Royal Game!

Chess Kid training and participation grew by 50%.

Chess Like in Movies

Thank you everyone for a very fun and successful  
4th Annual Scholastic Tournament at Handley Library on Saturday, February 17th.

Players from Grades 2 to 10 competed in our largest scholastic event yet. 

The kids worked hard to improve their chess.  We are proud of their accomplishments and great sportsmanship - especially many first time participants.

We would like to especially thank the parents and library staff who helped us over the finish line.  It was very busy and high energy! 

Future scholastic tournaments will be USCF rated events.

1st Apple Blossom Blitz Benefit Chess Tournament

We are pleased to announce that chess will receive a special place in the 91st Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival

We are working with the Apple Blossom team to form an official Apple Blossom Blitz Benefit Tournament - Saturday, April 28 from 11 am to 3 pm on the Old Town Walking Mall, Winchester. 

Site details, sections, prizes, and registration will be announced Wednesday, March 21.  Proceeds for this unrated blitz competition will be donated a community foundation.

In addition, we plan to setup chess along the Walking Mall during the 2018 Bloomin' Wine Festival.  

We are hoping for an exceptionally fun day of chess for everyone.

We would like to thank Incredible Flying Objects (pictured above), Thinker Toys, the Organizers of SABF for their sponsorship and support for this event.

March is an especially fun month with the 2018 FIDE Candidates in progress in Berlin, Germany.  8 challengers from 5 nations compete for the right to challenge World Champion Magnus Carlsen this November in London.
